The objective of my research was to create a mobile technology as a solution to the inefficient waste management system in Egypt. It was necessary to cultivate relationships among the Zabaleen and between the Zabaleen and the residents to achieve this objective. This technology will enhance the Zabaleen’s ability to integrate into the formal Solid Waste Management system.
As we worked together to formulate ideas and solutions, and ultimately design the app, it was apparent that the Zabaleen saw the benefits this technology could have. They became invested in the co-design process. As everyone had their own point of view, many different ideas could be produced and I found the energy of group participation made me feel more energetic about contributing something.
Zibal-T is based on participatory design, as a result different models appropriate to the local context of Cairo’s informal sector were integrated in the design of the app. he solid waste management system is constantly changing, which results in the need for evolving solutions.
New actors and initiatives are often infused into the solid waste management system, but with little to no follow-up, consideration to the impact on the Zabaleen, or plan for sustainability. It is important to work around this uncertain and fluid political atmosphere, and think of both alternative and constant factors to work with. Due to the these reasons, reaching out to unserved communities was preferable to competing with already established communities like Zamalek or serviced communities of Cairo.
It is essential to follow up on progress with the informants and participants that assisted in the co-design of Zibal-T in order to sustain future community and research work. Following up with the community will provide valuable insight as to whether using Zibal-T results in behaviors change with the resident and coordination of activities within the Zabaleen community. Ultimately, using Zibal-T will result in more trash pickups and increased recycling rates; therefore, the macro goal of cleaning accumulated trash from the streets of Cairo will be achieved.
